‍ About Dr. Onwuegbuchi

Dr. Nneoma Onwuegbuchi is an interdisciplinary scholar-activist specializing in gender and sexuality, African Literature-in-English, and global Black digital and screen media. Her research, teaching, and first book project examine gendered and queer articulations of agency in contemporary African media. Across African and Black diasporic contexts, my work explores the nexus of aesthetics, literary and filmic cultures, and transnational body politics. Alongside her doctorate, she holds a Ph.D. minor in Gender and Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as certificates in Designing Feminist Research and Intersectionality as a Theory and Methodology from The New School for Social Research in New York.

Prior to joining the faculty at Brown University, Dr. Onwuegbuchi was a Duberman-Zal Fellow at CLAGS at the CUNY Graduate Center (2023), and an Ebrahim Hussein Fellow (2023). Since then, she has been a West African Scholars Mobility Fellow (2024), a recipient of the Tejumola Olaniyan International Award (2024), a finalist for the Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant (2024), and a UW-Madison Doctoral Dissertation Fellow (2025). Her broader record of scholarly recognition includes a faculty nomination for the A. C. Jordan Prize (2026), the Dean’s Faculty Award from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and other distinguished fellowships, research awards, and competitive grants supporting her scholarship across the United States and West Africa.
